Sinners in the Hands of an Angry Mob America has always centered around the power of the people, viewed worldwide as rigorously patriotic, politically fair, and intelligent in design. This perception has created an arrogance within Americans, overestimating their place in the universe. As a nation, the U.S. remains divided. Despite attempts to unify, the political, racial, social, and gender rifts deteriorate essential freedoms. Arthur Miller, through many of his works, criticized this American state of superiority, exposing underlying insecurities within common pride. By these means, The Crucible exemplifies the American state of chaos; the myriad of ignorance, intolerance, and stubborn ways reflect just as disappointingly today as they did in the 1600s. As hysteria ran rampant, people began to believe things that were completely contradicted by common sense. The Salem Witch Trials were a prime example of this; combining the suppression of females in colonial society with religious and racial prejudice. Successful, up per-class women were vilified as witches, and their demise only further solidified the misogyny of the colonial era. Despite outrageous claims of voodoo and dark magic, the happenings were in large part due to actions of jealousy and envy, carried out through the selfishness of a small group of girls. Today, this group of girls is paralleled to Congress, mirrored by the same foolish behavior.
